Rubbed Garlic Bread

1 long loaf Italian or French bread
1 large garlic clove, peeled
3 tablespoons butter
1/4 teaspoon salt


  1. With a sharp bread knife cut the bread open, lengthwise, and put on a baking sheet.
  2. Under a preheated broiler, toast the bread, cut sides up for 2 minutes or until golden brown.
  3. Rub the garlic clove over the toasted surface of the bread, and spread it with the butter. Sprinkle with salt and close the loaf. Cut the bread crosswise into 1-inch slices and serve while still warm.
