Honey Apple Baklava
Well, two holiday favorites in one. Bake this in a deep, 10 inch tart pan for a nice change.
¾ cup unsalted butter, melted
3 cups toasted walnuts, finely chopped
½ cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3 cups, shredded apples (not peeled)
1 pound package frozen filo dough
3/4 cup water
¾ cup honey
¾ cup sugar
Preheat oven to 350 F.
Melt butter and set aside. In a large bowl, toss together the walnuts, sugar, cinnamon, and apples.
To assemble, brush pan bottom with some melted butter. Center a sheet of filo on this and drizzle that with melted butter. Layer on eight sheets, buttering between each and pressing into fluted sides (allow excess filo to extend over pan edge – you will fold it in later).
Spread on one half of apple/nut mixture. Repeat, using up all filo and filling. Brush top layer with butter. Roll excess filo into a tight border around tart (inner edge).
Using a very sharp paring knife, cut pastry into about 8 wedges and cross cut, or cross hatch center of tart.
Bake about one hour, reducing heat midway to 325 F until top pastry is golden brown.
Meanwhile, make syrup. In a medium saucepan, over medium heat, simmer water, sugar, honey, and cinnamon. Remove from stove and cool.
Pour over baklava and let stand 2 hours before serving or overnight.
