Caramel Nut Apple Pie

Ingredients

  • 4 C. Granny Smith apples
  • 1/2 C. sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 3 T. flour
  • 1 T. butter
  • 1/4 C. chopped macadamia nuts
  • 12 oz. vanilla caramels
  1. Peel and slice apples. Combine apples with sugar; sprinkle with cinnamon, dot with butter.
  2. Melt vanilla caramels in the top of a double boiler. Add the chopped nuts to the apple mixture. Put in an unbaked pie shell.
  3. Bake at 375º until soft. Pour caramel mixture over the apples and add the crumbs on top. Bake 5 more minutes.
  4. Cool before serving.

Crumb topping

  • 3/4 C. flour
  • 1/4 C. sugar
  • 1/4 C. butter
  • pinch salt
  1. Mix everything together in a bowl. Work until it forms crumbs
  2. Bake in a pan for 8-10 minutes at 400º

Crust

  • 3 C. flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg
  • 6 T. ice water
  • 2 tsp. vinegar
  • 1 1/2 C. shortening
  1. Mix flour, shortening and salt until crumbly.
  2. Add the beaten egg to the water and vinegar and mix with the flour mixture.
