B. Vandivers Chocolate Cake

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup cocoa
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 stick (8 Tablespoons) butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 2/3 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 large eggs
3/4 cup buttermilk

Chocolate frosting enough to frost a 2-layer cake
Chopped walnuts for garnish

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
Grease and flour two 9-inch round pans or one 13×9 inch baking pan; set aside.

In a medium bowl combine flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. In a large bowl beat together butter, shortening, sugar and vanilla; mix well until creamy. Add eggs and beat well. To creamed mixture, add flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Spread into prepared pans.

Bake 25 to 30 minutes. Cool in pans for 10 minutes; remove from pans and continue to cool on wire racks.

Frost with your choice of chocolate frosting; sprinkle with chopped walnuts.
